Param Pujya Yogacharini Meenakshi Devi Bhavanani, lovingly known as Ammaji, is one of the world's most respected exponents of traditional Yoga and a distinguished spiritual teacher, author, scholar, and cultural ambassador of India's timeless yogic heritage.

For more than five decades, she has dedicated her life to preserving, practising, teaching, and disseminating the authentic teachings of the Rishiculture Gitananda Yoga Tradition, inspiring thousands of students, teachers, therapists, healthcare professionals, and spiritual seekers across the globe.

The Journey to India

Born and raised in the United States, Ammaji's spiritual journey began with an inner quest for truth and higher understanding. While pursuing doctoral studies at the University of Minnesota, she encountered a book on Yoga whose profound message awakened a deep spiritual longing within her. Guided by this inspiration, she abandoned her plans to study Zen Buddhism in Japan and travelled overland to India in 1967. What began as a search soon became a homecoming, as she discovered in India the living spiritual culture she had always sought.

Meeting Her Guru

A defining moment in her life came when she met Yogamaharishi Dr. Swami Gitananda Giri Guru Maharaj at the Sri Aurobindo Ashram in Puducherry. Recognising him as her Guru, she entered into an intensive period of study and spiritual discipline under his direct guidance. She later became his devoted life partner, always affirming that she was first his sishya and only then his wife. Together they laid the foundation for one of the world's foremost living Yoga traditions, dedicated to preserving the holistic and spiritual essence of Yoga.

ICYER and Ananda Ashram

As the Resident Acharya of Ananda Ashram and Director of the International Centre for Yoga Education and Research (ICYER) in Puducherry, Ammaji has guided the institution to international recognition as a centre of excellence in traditional Yoga education. Under her leadership, ICYER has trained generations of Yoga teachers through comprehensive residential programmes that integrate philosophy, meditation, pranayama, yogic lifestyle, spiritual discipline, and self-transformation. Her emphasis has always been that Yoga is not merely a system of physical exercise but a complete science of conscious living and spiritual evolution.

Recognition and National Service

Ammaji's lifelong contributions have been recognised through numerous prestigious honours. She was conferred the title Yogamani by the late President of India, Giani Zail Singh, in recognition of her outstanding service to Yoga, and the Puduvai Kalaimamani by the Government of Puducherry for her exceptional contributions to Yoga and the performing arts. She has also served with distinction on several important national bodies under the Government of India, including the National Board for Yoga and Naturopathy under the Ministry of AYUSH, the Central Council for Research in Yoga and Naturopathy (CCRYN), and the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga (MDNIY). Through these appointments, she has contributed significantly to the development of Yoga education, research, policy, and the preservation of India's traditional knowledge systems.

Author and Speaker

An internationally acclaimed author and speaker, Ammaji has written extensively on Yoga philosophy, meditation, Tantra, Vedanta, holistic health, women's health, Indian culture, spirituality, and conscious living. Her books and scholarly publications have become invaluable resources for students and teachers seeking an authentic understanding of Yoga rooted in India's ancient wisdom traditions. Equally admired for her warmth, clarity, and practical insight, she has delivered lectures, workshops, and keynote addresses throughout India and abroad, making profound spiritual teachings accessible to modern audiences without compromising their authenticity.

Her Teaching

One of Ammaji's greatest gifts is her ability to embody the teachings she imparts. She continually reminds students that the true practice of Yoga begins not on the mat but in daily life through awareness, right attitude, harmonious relationships, and dedicated service to humanity. Her teachings encourage practitioners to cultivate rhythm, regularity, self-observation, adaptability, gratitude, and inner balance as foundations for spiritual growth.

Carrying the Legacy

Following the Mahasamadhi of Yogamaharishi Dr. Swami Gitananda Giri in 1993, Ammaji has continued to preserve and expand his extraordinary legacy alongside her son, Yogacharya Dr. Ananda Balayogi Bhavanani. Together they have ensured that the teachings of the Rishiculture Gitananda Yoga Tradition remain a vibrant living lineage, faithfully transmitted while remaining relevant to the needs of contemporary society.
