BACKGROUND

Yoganjali Natyalayam is a distinguished cultural and educational institution in Pondicherry dedicated to the classical arts of Yoga, Bharatanatyam, and Carnatic music. Established on March 27, 1993 by Yogamaharishi Dr. Swami Gitananda Giri, it functions as the city centre of the International Centre for Yoga Education and Research (ICYER).

Located centrally behind the Pondicherry Main Bus Stand, Yoganjali Natyalayam has grown into a vibrant academy with hundreds of active students and thousands of alumni, nurturing traditional Indian arts and holistic education.

PHILOSOPHY

Yoganjali Natyalayam is rooted in an integrative philosophy that blends classical Indian artistic disciplines with yogic wisdom and holistic personal development:

  • Yoga as life science: Beyond exercises, yoga here is taught as a path to physical well-being, mental clarity, and spiritual awareness.

  • Classical aesthetics: Bharatanatyam and Carnatic music are taught not as performance arts alone, but as expressions of culture, discipline, and inner harmony.

  • Character and confidence building: The curriculum encourages students of all ages to grow in confidence, behavioral strength, and self-disciplined expression through structured learning and community participation.

This holistic blend reflects a belief that true education nurtures body, mind, and spirit together.

LINEAGE

Yoganjali Natyalayam sits within the broader Rishiculture and Gitananda Yoga tradition, guided by the lineage and vision of Yogamaharishi Dr. Swami Gitananda Giri — a renowned sage and teacher who emphasized the living transmission of yoga and classical Indian culture in the modern world.

While Yoganjali Natyalayam itself is primarily a cultural educational centre and not a spiritual guru lineage institution in the monastic sense, it draws inspiration from:

  • The Gitananda Yoga tradition, which values integrity, devotion, and excellence in practice.

  • The educational model of Guru-shishya (teacher–student) transmission, where mentorship is central to learning.

  • A commitment to preserving Sanātana Dharma arts and sciences holistically.

Through senior teachers and mentors aligned with this tradition, students carry forward a living heritage of classical Indian expression.
