Yoga Chikitsa: Healing the Person, Not the Disease

One of the greatest misunderstandings in modern Yoga Therapy is the belief that every disease has a fixed yogic prescription.
We have slowly begun to imitate the medical model, asking, "What is the protocol for migraine? What is the protocol for sinusitis? What is the protocol for depression?"
Yet Yoga was never designed to treat diseases in this manner.
Consider something as simple as Bhramari Pranayama. Many studies have shown its benefits, and so we assume that if a person has migraine, we simply teach them Bhramari.
But Yoga Chikitsa demands a deeper question: What type of Bhramari is appropriate for this individual?
When we teach thirty or fifty students together, everyone naturally learns the same practice. Later, that identical practice is prescribed to someone seeking healing. If it aggravates their condition, we are quick to conclude that yoga has failed. The truth is quite different. We have not failed because of Yoga—we have failed because we ignored the individuality of the person before us.
A class meant for learning is not the same as a therapeutic intervention meant for healing.
Each human being carries a unique psycho-physiological pattern. One person naturally speaks in a soft, low tone; another is energetic and expressive. Asking both of them to practise Bhramari in exactly the same pitch and intensity is like prescribing the same shoe size to everyone. For one person, a higher pitch may bring balance and clarity. For another, it may increase tension, even aggravating blood pressure or symptoms. Yoga Therapy therefore requires viveka—the wisdom to discern what is needed by this individual at this moment.
Unfortunately, modern healthcare often encourages standardization. It seeks protocols that can be applied uniformly, because that is how conventional systems operate.
Yet Yoga belongs to a different paradigm. It is not merely a collection of techniques packaged according to diseases. It is an individualized science that honours the uniqueness of every human being.
True Yoga Chikitsa begins not with the diagnosis, but with the person. When we learn to see the individual beyond the disease, every practice becomes a living prescription, tailored through awareness, compassion, and discernment.
That is the timeless wisdom of Yoga—and that is where real healing begins.
