Does your nose follow the moon?

For thousands of years, yogic traditions have taught that the flow of breath through our nostrils reflects more than just normal breathing—it is intimately connected with our body's rhythms, our state of mind, and even the cycles of the moon. This fascinating concept, known as Swarodaya Vigjnan, has long guided practitioners in choosing the most appropriate times for activity, rest, and meditation. But can such an ancient idea stand up to scientific investigation?

A pioneering study by Yogacharya Dr. Ananda Balayogi Bhavanani sought to answer this question by examining whether the dominant nostril at sunrise follows the lunar patterns described in the classical Shiva Swarodaya. The work gained international attention after being referenced in James Nestor's bestselling book Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art, bringing renewed interest to this remarkable intersection of yoga and science.

Modern physiology recognizes the nasal cycle, a natural rhythm in which one nostril remains more open than the other for a few hours before the dominance shifts. While this phenomenon was scientifically described only in the late nineteenth century, yogic literature had documented and interpreted it centuries earlier. According to Swarodaya, the left nostril (Ida or Chandra Swara) is associated with calmness, receptivity, and the lunar principle, while the right nostril (Pingala or Surya Swara) represents activity, vitality, and the solar principle. When both nostrils flow equally, the texts recommend meditation, describing it as a unique moment of inner balance.

To investigate these traditional claims, eight yoga students residing at the International Centre for Yoga Education and Research (ICYER), Pondicherry, observed their nostril dominance every morning at sunrise over an entire lunar month. Participants came from diverse cultural backgrounds, including India, Spain, Switzerland, Ireland, and Canada, allowing comparisons across different populations. Their observations were then compared with the predictions found in the ancient yogic texts.

The findings were both intriguing and balanced. Across the full lunar month, the ancient predictions matched the observed breathing pattern on about half the days, suggesting that the relationship is more complex than a simple yes-or-no answer. However, the most striking observations occurred during the full moon and new moon, when the predicted nostril dominance appeared much more clearly among participants. The study also found notable differences between men and women, as well as between Indian and non-Indian participants, raising important questions about the possible influence of hormones, lifestyle, and environmental adaptation.

Perhaps the greatest contribution of this study lies not in proving an ancient belief right or wrong, but in demonstrating that traditional yogic knowledge can be investigated using modern scientific methods. Instead of dismissing classical wisdom as superstition or accepting it unquestioningly, the research transformed a centuries-old teaching into a testable scientific hypothesis. The results suggest that while subtle lunar influences may not be evident every day, they could become more pronounced during the strongest phases of the lunar cycle, inviting further exploration with larger and more rigorous studies.

This work stands as an excellent example of integrative research, where ancient experiential knowledge meets contemporary scientific inquiry. It reminds us that yoga is not merely a collection of practices but also a sophisticated system of observation that has inspired meaningful research questions. As future studies build upon these preliminary findings, they may deepen our understanding of the relationship between breath, biology, and the natural rhythms that continue to shape human life.
