One of the most profound teachings shared by Param Pujya Ammaji Yogacharini Meenakshi Devi Bhavanani is the understanding of life through the interconnected concepts of Prakruti, Vikruti, and Sanskruti. These three principles beautifully describe the human journey—from our original state of harmony, through the challenges and distortions of worldly life, to the conscious cultivation of our highest potential.
Together, they provide a timeless map for understanding not only who we are, but who we can become.
Prakruti – Our Original Nature
Every human being is born with an innate nature, known in yoga as Prakruti. This is our original state of balance and harmony—the divine blueprint with which we enter the world. It is pure, spontaneous, and deeply connected with the rhythms of nature.
Prakruti is more than our physical constitution. It is the expression of our authentic self before it becomes conditioned by fear, ambition, social expectations, and habitual patterns. Like a clear mountain spring, it flows naturally, reflecting the wisdom and intelligence of life itself.
When we are aligned with our Prakruti, there is an effortless sense of peace, purpose, and well-being.
Vikruti – When We Drift Away
Life, however, rarely allows us to remain untouched.
As we grow, our experiences, attachments, emotional reactions, and unconscious habits begin to cloud our original nature. This deviation is known as Vikruti.
Vikruti is not something imposed upon us by the outside world alone. It develops through our own responses to life. Ego, unrefined desires, fear, anger, greed, jealousy, and excessive identification with the external world gradually pull us away from our centre.
Ammaji reminds us that suffering does not arise simply because difficulties exist; it arises because we lose touch with our essential nature.
The greater the distance between Prakruti and Vikruti, the greater our experience of inner conflict, stress, and dissatisfaction.
Sanskruti – The Art of Conscious Refinement
The beauty of yogic philosophy lies in its optimism. It teaches that no distortion is permanent.
The bridge back to harmony is Sanskruti—the conscious refinement of our body, mind, emotions, and character through disciplined living.
Sanskruti is far more than culture in its conventional sense. It is the ongoing process of polishing the human personality through right values, self-discipline, self-study, compassion, devotion, and yogic practice.
Every conscious breath, every act of kindness, every moment of self-reflection, and every sincere spiritual practice becomes part of this refining process.
It is through Sanskruti that Vikruti gradually dissolves, allowing our original Prakruti to shine once again.
The Journey of Awareness
Ammaji beautifully points out that without conscious awakening, our habits merely make our egos more sophisticated—not wiser. We may become more educated, more accomplished, or more efficient, yet remain trapped in the same unconscious patterns that separate us from our true nature.
Real transformation begins when we become aware of awareness itself. Yoga invites us to observe rather than merely react, to choose rather than simply repeat, and to live consciously rather than mechanically.
This is the heart of Sanskruti.
The journey from Prakruti, through Vikruti, to Sanskruti is not a linear progression but a lifelong practice of remembering who we truly are. Each day offers an opportunity to move a little closer to our authentic nature, replacing unconscious habits with conscious living.
As our beloved Ammaji reminds us, the goal of yoga is not to become someone new, but to remove the layers that conceal our original wholeness. Through conscious refinement, we rediscover the divine harmony that has always existed within us, allowing our lives to become an expression of wisdom, compassion, and inner freedom.
